    IMAGE_005IMAGE_006IMAGE_007IMAGE_010

Hi Everyone,  I hope all of you are having great summers so far!!!! I'm heading out of town for a few weeks so I wanted to fill in the last week as well the next few weeks. I'm leaving for Dallas in the morning for Kelly's MK seminar. This will be my 15th year in a row heading to Dallas in July. It's always a awesome week where my wife's company celebrates and recognizes it's top people. Awesome show and week!!! I get out on the Golf Course 3-4 times too which I'm looking forward to since I have not been able to find the time this year to play. On the 26th I will be in Las Cruces, New Mexico for my Buddy Danny Montoya's Wedding on the 31st. Danny and I have done most of our Ironman Races together and Danny once again earned his Ironman Hawaii Kona Slot 2 weeks ago at Buffalo Springs....I think this is his 4th or 5th KONA Trip.  He's having quite the year this season and running the times I always knew he was capable of running......Can't wait to see you Bro!! August 2nd I will be in L.A. ( Manhattan Beach) at my Mom's house.....  I will be competing in the National Lifeguard Championships on August 7th-8th and 9th at Manhattan Beach Pier as well as attending my 30 year High School Reunion... Yes, 30 Years!!!!

So, Check out the pictures above from last weekend on the beach..... Crazy weekend with over 65 rescues, a major surf contest and packed beaches. We were blessed with great surf from Hurricane Bertha and I think I totaled 6-7 hours of surf time in between work and TRI training!!! I was worked  BIG time Sunday night especially after Jackie, Josh and I cranked out a 120 Bike Ride Sunday morning. It was Hot and very Humid!!  I drank a big Chocolate Milk at 70 miles... Big Mistake!!!  Saturday mornings ride I saw something I had never seen before.... a dead Alligator on the side of the road coming back on HWY 421.... imagine!!!  I shot Bike Cycles Racing Team Pictures and Shop Pictures monday night.... check out pics under PHOTOS!!!

My "WHAT IT TAKES" Training Crew is doing great and getting better all the time!! I am so proud of each and every one of them. Not one athlete has not made BIG Gains this year !!!! They are constantly upping their games and outdoing theirselves by the week. We are only just beginning!!!!  Sami just got back from IM France and is Gung Ho and ready for Florida in November. Josh Dixon is now my Assistant Coach and helping me in all aspects of coaching and helping all athletes. I will be adding more coaches etc, as this season ends and moving into next season. I can also take on more athletes now so send me a e-mail or call if you are interested in joining "What It Takes" training. I guarantee to help you to become a better more complete athlete in every way no matter where you in your training and racing now.....

    IT'S IN YOUR MIND..........

Brain So Hey Everyone ( What it Takes Athletes)  Time to really get started and begin what is the most important aspect of this sport triathlon to which we have attached ourselves .......  This will keep going week to week and you will get e-mails  most days either thru your regular E-mail or on your Training Peaks e-mail.... My Coaches Training Peaks has been down the past day  so I am writing on this account tonight...... a lot of times what I write will end abruptly and I will continue the next day!!! When my mind goes so do I....... all this information comes as I mixture of my thoughts from 28 years of triathlon as well as a few different books I am going thru......  It is all so important and I hope you take this all to heart and use it in your daily workouts from here on out!!  It will change everything.....  we all can do the workouts, and yes, they help a lot but what really makes the difference are the thoughts that go thru our minds and how we choose to deal with those thoughts as our races unfold.
When we compete in a Triathlon we are competing in two races. The obvious part is the Swim, Bike and Run. The more significant race though, is the race that occurs in your mind. When you succeed in the mental race you will succeed in Triathlon....... I have seen over and over again athletes who look great on paper and in training, who do all the right workouts and training, are fit and fast and tough only to never be able to bring it to the table on race day or ever reach their full potential. On the other hand I have seen time and time again not the most talented athletes who have great races time and time again especially in the longer distances because of their mental toughness...(I mean a lot) I remember when I first started doing Ironman years and years ago how tough the girls were out on the Ironman course. I was most amazed and impressed.   What kind of athlete do you want to be??? My hope is that over the course of the  summer we will all become so very mentally tough that you will become unstoppable. Everyone of you have that power within you!! WE all do!!! The question is?? will you seriously work on it and let me help that side of yourself shine thru?? Just Go for it!!! I need this refresher course too so this will be sort of a lesson I am writing to myself. Since I no longer have back issues which I believe was the beginning of the end of my career, I find myself ready to really get rolling again...  This is all of our gains......  too much experience and too much in my mind to hold within.
With all of that said, triathletes who are the most motivated to train, who have the most confidence in themselves, who race best under pressure, who stay focused on their race, who keep their emotions under control, and who can overcome the pain on race day will most often achieve their Triathlon goals..... Come with me on this journey!!! I start this week with motivation because without the motivation to get out the door and train we cannot even begin anything else. Athletes: Check your e-mails or Training Peaks e-mails everyday!!! I have enough information to share to last the rest of the year!!!!!!!!!    Glenn
I know it's a bit of a cliche'- " Do the best you can"- but what more can you do? If your strong upstairs, then you'll race well. There's not much more you can do than concentrate on your own day and just get out there and give it a go.---  Spencer Smith, three time ITU World Champion

    HOME AGAIN

DSC_3720While it is always great to leave and get out of town for a while, it's always nice to get back home  and back to work and play....... My three weeks abroad were great !!!! Beautiful and eventful..... Two totally different countries (Philippines and Australia) in every aspect of the word..... The picture above was a shot I took one of the last nights I was in Sydney, Australia. We were at a party and outside this fireworks display was happening  over the Sydney Opera House. I have many great pictures etc. that I will share in the next few weeks so keep checking back. I started back today on the beach lifeguarding and I must admit it was really nice being back and great to see so many of the guys back from last summer...... the bike shop ( BIKE CYCLES) is so super busy I don't know how Shawn keeps it all together. I'm very happy for him!!!  I have several new projects in the works so It will be a busy summer working on those as well as my time in the shop and on the beach as well as making my athletes I coach as fast as humanly possible!!!!!  I plan on being in great racing shape by September as well but I first I have Lifeguard Nationals in Manhattan Beach, California (Home) in August!!!! I hope all of your summers are starting out fantastic!!!! Take care................  Glenn

    THINK MUCH???

The Art of Over Thinking THINKER1

I first became interested in the subject several years ago, by simply observing top athletes and trying to find a commonality among them. Besides the obvious of all being gifted individuals, I could not help but notice how most every successful athlete had an overwhelming sense of casualness to their efforts.

While I agree it is important to pay attention to detail and follow a well thought out plan in any approach to sport, all too often I see athletes (myself included) needlessly worrying about secondary issues such as equipment, weight, past performances and even the competition, most of which, we have little or no control of once the gun goes off.

I look back on some of most proudest performances and realize that they all came at times when I really did not put much thought into the outcome. Of course I had worked extremely hard before the event, but the same could be said for some of my worst performances. More often than not, many of my "PR's" have come at times when I did not wear a watch during the race or at a time when there was nothing at stake in the race. I simply competed.

Simon Whitfield, triathlon's first Olympic Gold Medalist even refers to his "kid spirit" when he talks about the process of achieving that gold medal here.

I believe that the "art of over thinking" is a contributing factor to why we see many young athletes reach their highest level of performances at a very young age. As they grow, so too does their desire to "control" more of the outcome, and with that desire comes the loss of spontaneity and natural state required to perform at 100%

Although originally used as a marketing tool to sell shoes, Nike truly hit the nail on the head when they created the "just do it" campaign. In its simplest terms, "just do it" means exactly that. Stop thinking about how, why, when. Let it all go, and simply do it.

Just something to think about ;-)

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

    Thanks Danny Montoya

The best shortcut is to avoid looking for a shortcut!!!

The most valuable secret to success is that there is no secret. Success comes from not seeking to uncover some hidden formula, but rather persistently following through on opportunities to create value.

The most effective way to handle what must be done is to do it. Simply get busy and do the work required, for that is the quickest way to reach the goals you've set.

Life is not always easy, and wishing for things to be easier usually makes things more difficult. The time-tested strategy for making life easier is to go ahead and work though each challenge as it comes along.

The route to happiness is no secret, and is in fact in plain view. Use every opportunity to be productive and you'll go precisely where you want to go..................

    River 2 Sea...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The annual River to the Sea road race took place today. Unique in that there is no planned route, each competitor finds his or her own way from Downtown Wilmington to the Sunspree Holliday Inn in Wrightsville Beach........ I took a simpler route this year instead of winding thru the neighborhoods as well as the woods of UNCW. My garmin at the end of the race totaled 10.6 miles which compared to some of the other Runners was pretty good. My run was good for 3rd Overall, Tom Clifford was 1st and Shawn Spencer was 2nd!!! I think there were 100 athletes competing!! Great job to all the runners!!  It was pretty cold there at the end!!!!!! Here's a pic of a few of us at the end!!!!!
